Una fetta di patrimonio italiano – A slice of Italian Heritage
Ottobre è il mese del patrimonio e della cultura italo-americano negli Stati Uniti dal 1989.
Ottobre è stato scelto perché è anche il mese in cui celebriamo il Columbus Day. Quale modo migliore per festeggiare che avere un Festival! Il Club italo-americano di Hilton Head Island (IACHH) ha tenuto la sua undicesima edizione dell’Italian Heritage Festival sabato 23 ottobre presso il bellissimo Coastal Discovery Museum situato al 70 di Honey Horn Drive.
L’IACHH è composto da individui unici che sono orgogliosi del loro club.
Promuovono il patrimonio e la cultura italiana mentre raccolgono fondi per borse di studio per studenti locali e organizzazioni di beneficenza. Il presidente IACHH John De Cecco e sua moglie Carmen hanno dichiarato: “Siamo così orgogliosi di restituire alla comunità che dà così generosamente a tutti i nostri eventi”.
L’annuale Italian Heritage Festival si è aperto con gli inni nazionali americani e italiani. La musica dal vivo è stata fornita dalla Hilton Head Plantation Big Band guidata da Rodger Decelles e dal suo talentuoso gruppo di musicisti e cantanti. C’era qualcosa per tutta la famiglia. Avevano una sezione per bambini con gonfiabili e il Mr. Puppet Comedy Show. Potresti vedere l’artigianato in alcuni degli oggetti fatti a mano come le trapunte. C’era altra merce come magliette, sigari, ceppi e altri oggetti. Avevano persino l’agopuntura per i tuoi animali domestici e un Barber Shop mobile! Ci sono state anche diverse lotterie durante la giornata. Le gare di calpestamento dell’uva e di pizzaiolo per bambini e adulti facevano parte dell’intrattenimento. Poi, naturalmente, c’era da mangiare e da bere. I venditori hanno allineato i percorsi del festival. I ristoranti locali hanno offerto una selezione dei loro gustosi piatti e ci sono state alcune dimostrazioni di cucina. Si possono trovare prelibatezze tra cui cannoli, zeppoli e gelati. Potresti dissetarti con qualsiasi cosa, dal ghiaccio italiano alla birra e al vino.
Io stesso ho preso un delizioso panino con salsiccia e sfogliatelle da Mulberry Street Trattoria. Ho dovuto provare del gelato Hilton Head fatto in casa servito da un camion della metropolitana vintage. Mentre vagavo per i festeggiamenti del giorno, non ho potuto fare a meno di notare la frizzante Tomato Girl conosciuta come GinaMarie Hunt del ristorante di Stellini. Stava raccogliendo gli escrementi di pomodorini che aveva lasciato. Per concludere tutto è stata un’asta silenziosa con molti oggetti tra cui scegliere. Gli articoli includevano arte, decorazioni per la casa, abbigliamento e buoni regalo per numerosi articoli e attività. L’asta è stata guidata da Carmen DeCecco e altri membri dell’IACHH con il ricavato destinato a numerosi enti di beneficenza e borse di studio.
L’anno prossimo, quando stai pensando ai posti da visitare in ottobre, considera di visitare l’Italian Heritage Festival ospitato dall’Italian-American Club Hilton Head. Hilton Head Island è stata votata più volte come l’isola numero 1 negli Stati Uniti continentali da Travel and Leisure Magazine. Fino alla prossima volta!

A SLICE OF ITALIAN HERITAGE
October has been Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month in the United States since 1989.
October was chosen because it’s also the month we celebrate Columbus Day. What better way to celebrate than to have a Festival! The Italian-American Club of Hilton Head Island (IACHH) held their 11th annual Italian Heritage Festival on Saturday Oct. 23 on the grounds of the beautiful Coastal Discovery Museum located at 70 Honey Horn Drive.
The IACHH is composed of unique individuals that take pride in their club.
They promote Italian heritage and culture while fundraising for local student scholarships and charitable organizations. IACHH President John De Cecco and his wife Carmen stated ” We are so proud to give back to the community that gives so generously to all our events”.
The annual Italian Heritage Festival opened with the American and Italian National Anthems. Live music was provided by Hilton Head Plantation Big Band led by Rodger Decelles and his talented group of musicians and vocalists. There was something for the entire family. They had a kids section with inflatables and the Mr. Puppet Comedy Show. You could see the craftsmanship in some of the handmade items such as the quilts. There was other merchandise such as t-shirts, cigars, chopping blocks and other swag. They even had acupuncture for your pets and a mobile Barber Shop! There were also several raffles throughout the day. Grape stomping and pizza eating contests for children and adults were part of the entertainment. Then, of course, there was food and drink. Vendors lined the pathways of the festival. Local restaurants offered a selection of their tasty dishes and there were a few cooking demonstrations. Delicious treats including cannoli’s, zeppoli’s, and gelato could be found. You could quench your thirst with anything from Italian ice to beer and wine.
I myself got a delicious sausage sandwich and sfogliatelle from Mulberry Street Trattoria. I had to try some homemade Hilton Head Ice Cream being served from a vintage Metro truck. As I wandered through the festivities of the day, I couldn’t help but notice the bubbly Tomato Girl known as GinaMarie Hunt from Stellini’s restaurant. She was picking up little cherry tomato droppings that she left behind. To end it all was a silent auction with copious items to choose from. Items included art, home decor, clothing and gift certificates for numerous items and activities. The auction was headed up by Carmen DeCecco and other members of the IACHH with the proceeds going to numerous charities and scholarships.
Next year when you’re thinking of places to visit in October, consider visiting the Italian Heritage Festival hosted by Italian-American Club Hilton Head. Hilton Head Island has been voted the #1 Island in the Continental United States by Travel and Leisure Magazine numerous times. Until next time!
